Everyday activities can be artistic and feminist. For example, sending and retrieving mail can be through feminist art. Consider the word “mail,” phonetically it sounds exactly like “male.” Is the mail system another example of subliminal oppression to women? How can this be reconstructed?
The piece “Wonder Fe-mail” sets out to reconstruct the everyday into feminist art. Inspired by the comics of Wonder Woman, this “fe-mail” box is equipped with the “Lasso of Truth” and a simplified figure of Wonder Women on the flag. The door of the box is her logo of the winged W’s. The metal box is smooth with a pop of red and yellow, signature of the comic hero. This “fe-mail” box represents equality of female and male bodies (and all in-between). It is designed with a hero’s strength and message. The everyday has the potential to be political art; “Wonder Fe-mail” is just that.
