Feminine Shield

 This shield initially started as a simple response to sci-fi movies of zombies and the media’s on going discussion of impending doom.

The “Feminine Shield” became more than a sci-fi prosthetic but an empowerment piece for women in issues of self defense. Wearing it gave a sense of danger, power and strength. Instantly, one felt ready for battle, against anyone. It was also functional and comfortable to wear. Custom fitting for a woman, the piece also highlights the desire or the need for a woman to protect herself. Personal safety for women is relevant before any apocalypse. The sensation of wearing this arm piece often gave a pending sense of danger, the awareness that battle is approaching or near. 

In today’s context, the battle is ongoing. Women everyday have to fight against street harassment and assault. Fear is taught to every woman; fear of walking home, to the car and being alone without someone else with you everywhere you go. Violence against women is the world’s obvious injustice to human beings. It is more real than any possible zombie apocalypse; it is the social dis-ease we need to fight.
